One time I had a vision: I saw the earth from space, as if I were sitting on a satellite, and rising from the earth into limitless space, past my field of vision, was a light beam hundreds of miles across (at least). On one side of the beam I saw myself in a glass box, on the other side I saw my husband, also encased in glass. Our boxes were cracked and mine had a hole punched clear through it. I knew in the moment I received the image that the entire purpose of our lives was to leave the box and enter the beam.
I’ve started to consider that perhaps this writing project, named BEHOLD, is like a field guide for the liminal space between the box and the beam.
The title “Behold” came from that place between sleep and waking, where one morning the word landed bright in my awareness and I knew it intended to become something more. It also comes from the Bible where, depending on your translation, it occurs upwards of 1300 times and means, “to see with full attention.”
I want to see more, to see the truth: about myself, about others, about God, about right now in this moment, about our beautiful and indispensable role in relation to all the cosmos.
So maybe I could write a newsletter about it?
This Substack was originally built in December 2021 and we might note it was an idea before that. I have disposed an arsenal of excuses and rationalizations to prevent the tumbling of this idea into form. I have longed to remain un-obligated, free from any promise requiring that I appear in a certain place at a certain time, even virtually.
But the inclination to curate a space for my writing and wisdom has not ceased and the now-tired efforts to resist it have brought me to many a bathroom floor. Consider this my public consent: I will write the damn blog!
And if my bedraggled surrender is not enticing enough, I formally invite you to follow along!
Truly, I am filled with a new energy at the prospect of sharing my insides here. I am hopeful and inspired, empowered and uplifted by what becomes possible when we give ourselves over to that which longs to come through us.
So here’s the deal: I’m publishing a (mostly) weekly personal essay on themes usually related to theology, psychology, inner development, embodiment, spiritual practice, and seeing beyond our ordinary perceptions. Cameos may appear on the topics of traveling full-time in a camper and mindfully attempting to unschool two small boys. Already, three of the four existing posts include teachings from Jesus in The Gospel of Thomas. I am hopeful that by reading you will feel companioned on your own inner journey.
Additionally, I’m recording a monthly “podcast” (called Inner Eye) answering your questions usually related to the topics above. If you pay to read this publication, you will receive access to the podcast as well! Plus a discount on any classes I teach.
[As of October 2023, I’ve traded the monthly podcast for coffee dates. If you’re a paid subscriber, you will receive an email each month with three openings for a first-come-first-served coffee date where we virtually hang out, entirely for fun.]
Accessibility is a high value for me, therefore, instead of funneling my energy into the creation of high-ticket coaching programs for a few (which isn’t wrong), I’m building communal containers and pouring out Wisdom’s wine for the many.
If you are resourced, I hope you’ll consider investing in this work.
